What Is Buddy the Unicorn?

Buddy the Unicorn is the title character of Buddy, a horror comedy released in US theaters on August 28, 2026. He is a bright orange unicorn who hosts a children's TV show called It's Buddy!

On screen, the show looks sweet: songs, games and a friendly mascot. The horror comes from what happens when one child refuses to play along, and the happy set starts to crack.

Keegan-Michael Key voices Buddy. The live-action cast includes Cristin Milioti, Delaney Quinn, Topher Grace and Clint Howard, with Michael Shannon and Patton Oswalt voicing other puppet characters.

That mix of a soft, toy-like unicorn and a slasher plot is the whole joke, and it is also why the character works so well as a Halloween costume: it reads as cute until someone tilts their head and keeps smiling.

Buddy (2026): Director, Release Date and Rating

Buddy is directed by Casper Kelly, the creator of the viral short Too Many Cooks, and written by Kelly with Jamie King. It premiered in the Midnight section of the Sundance Film Festival on January 22, 2026.

Roadside Attractions and Saban Films released it in US theaters on August 28, 2026. Listings give a runtime of about 95 to 96 minutes.

The MPA rated Buddy R for bloody violence, some drug content and language. Dread Central pointed out that all three involve children in the story, which is part of why the film is not a family pick despite its puppet-show look.

Buddy the Unicorn Costume Ideas: DIY, Cute, Creepy and Couple

A good homemade version needs three pieces: an orange plush suit, a rainbow mane and a gold horn. Everything else is attitude.

You do not need a licensed outfit. An original orange unicorn with your own details is safer to share and still reads as the trend.

  • Orange plush suit: an orange fleece onesie with a hood, plus a lighter belly patch cut from felt.
  • Rainbow mane: strands of rainbow yarn sewn along the hood seam and down the back.
  • Gold horn: a felt or foam cone painted gold and stitched to the top of the hood, with two small ears beside it.
  • Cute version: bright smile, a wave, a rainbow backdrop and big cartoon eyes on the hood.
  • Creepy version: one hard light, a fixed wide smile and a slow head tilt. Unsettling works better than gore.
  • Couple idea: one person in the unicorn suit, the other as a cheerful retro kids' TV host with a pastel cardigan and a big microphone.

Where to Watch Buddy (2026) at Home

Buddy has been available to rent or buy on digital since October 13, 2026. The release announcement did not name specific stores, so check the movie storefront you already use, such as your TV's store or your phone's video app.

No subscription streaming service had been announced when we checked on October 20, 2026. A JustWatch search for "Buddy 2026" shows current rent, buy and stream options in your country.

Physical copies come later: DVD and Blu-ray are due December 8, 2026, and a special-edition VHS opens for pre-order on November 24 through Witter Entertainment.

Is Buddy the Movie OK for Kids?

No. Common Sense Media rates Buddy 16+, and its review describes bloody wounds, stabbings and a costumed character attacking a child with a knife.

It also notes strong language, some of it spoken by children, and a scene where kids eat psychedelic flowers and hallucinate. The MPA's R rating says the same in fewer words.

The costume is a different story. An orange unicorn suit with a rainbow mane is just a bright, friendly outfit, so a younger trick-or-treater can wear one without ever seeing the film.

Planning a family-friendly version? Try the cute rainbow look on your own photo first. Only upload photos of yourself or adults who agreed, never of children.
