Five Halloween pet looks we tested on a sample dog and cat

Four looks were made from the same golden retriever photo and one from a black cat, each shown with its exact prompt. Press Use this look, then swap in your own pet to make your dog Halloween photo.

Dog costume looks

All four started from one photo of a golden retriever sitting on an autumn porch. The face, the open-mouth smile and the red-gold coat held in every dog Halloween photo.

Original photo: golden retriever sitting on a wooden porch with autumn leaves
Original
Golden retriever wearing a black vampire cape with a red lining, sitting in a candlelit stone castle doorway under a full moon with bats

Dog · Classic spooky

Tiny Vampire

A black velvet cape with a red satin lining and a tall collar, in a stone castle doorway with candles, a full moon and a few bats. The most classic dog Halloween photo of the set.

The face, smile and coat matched the original closely. The castle came out a little like a studio backdrop, so ask for a darker, softer background if you want it moodier.

Prompt

Use the uploaded photo as the primary reference. Keep the same dog: same breed, face, fur color, eyes and expression. Dress the dog in a black velvet vampire cape with a red satin lining and a tall collar. Place the dog in a stone castle doorway lit by candles, with a few bats in the night sky behind. Photorealistic pet photography, natural fur, correct dog anatomy. Keep one dog. Avoid gore, extra legs, text, logos and watermarks.

Golden retriever in a pale green dinosaur hoodie with spikes, sitting in a night backyard surrounded by glowing jack-o'-lanterns

Dog · Cute

Glow Dino

A soft green dinosaur hoodie with spikes down the back and tail, glowing gently in a night backyard full of carved jack-o'-lanterns. Funny rather than scary.

The hood went over the head, so the ears are hidden and only the face shows. The glow is soft, not neon. Ask for the hood down if your dog's ears are its best feature.

Prompt

Use the uploaded photo as the primary reference. Keep the same dog: same breed, face, fur color, eyes and expression. Dress the dog in a glow-in-the-dark dinosaur hoodie costume with soft green spikes along the back. Place the dog in a backyard at night with carved jack-o'-lanterns, the costume glowing softly. Photorealistic pet photography, correct dog anatomy. Keep one dog. Avoid extra legs, text, logos and watermarks.

Original
Golden retriever dressed as a scarecrow with a straw hat and patched plaid vest in a cornfield at sunset, crows on a fence behind

Dog · Harvest

Scarecrow Pup

A small straw hat, a patched plaid vest and straw poking out of the collar, in a golden cornfield at sunset with crows on a fence. Warm and friendly for autumn posts.

Every part of the costume showed up, crows included. The light came out warm and slightly painted, more storybook than snapshot. It suits fluffy, light-coated dogs well.

Prompt

Use the uploaded photo as the primary reference. Keep the same dog: same breed, face, fur color, eyes and expression. Dress the dog as a scarecrow: a small straw hat, a patched flannel vest and bits of straw poking out of the collar. Place the dog in a golden cornfield at sunset with a few crows on a fence. Photorealistic pet photography, correct dog anatomy. Keep one dog. Avoid extra legs, text, logos and watermarks.

Original
Golden retriever wrapped in loose cream mummy bandages with its face uncovered, sitting in a candlelit crypt with small pumpkins

Dog · Playful spooky

Mummy Pup

Loose cream bandages around the body and front legs, the face left free, in a candlelit stone crypt with small pumpkins. Spooky in theme, sweet in mood.

The face and eyes stayed uncovered because the prompt asks for it. Leave that line in: without it, wraps can creep over the head and hide the face you want to see.

Prompt

Use the uploaded photo as the primary reference. Keep the same dog: same breed, face, fur color, eyes and expression; keep the face and eyes uncovered. Dress the dog as a cute mummy with loose soft cream bandages wrapped around the body and legs. Place the dog in a candlelit stone crypt decorated with small pumpkins. Playful, not scary, photorealistic pet photography, correct dog anatomy. Keep one dog. Avoid extra legs, text, logos and watermarks.

A cat Halloween photo look

Cats work the same way. This one started from a black cat lying on a wooden windowsill, looking straight at the camera.

Original photo: black cat with amber eyes lying on a wooden windowsill
Original
Black cat with amber eyes wearing a small purple witch cape on a windowsill next to a jack-o'-lantern and a tiny broom, full moon and bats outside

Cat · Witchy

Witch Cat

A small deep purple cape tied at the neck and a tiny broom, on the windowsill beside a carved jack-o'-lantern with a full moon and bats outside.

The amber eyes and black coat held well. The window turned into night on one side only, while the left edge kept the original daylight. Ask for the whole window at night if that bothers you.

Prompt

Use the uploaded photo as the primary reference. Keep the same cat: same black fur, amber eyes and face. Give the cat a small witch's cape in deep purple and a tiny broom beside it, sitting on the windowsill with a carved jack-o'-lantern, a full moon and a few bats outside the window. Photorealistic pet photography, natural fur, correct cat anatomy. Keep one cat. Avoid extra legs, text, logos and watermarks.

Why make a dog Halloween photo instead of a costume shoot

Most pets tolerate a costume for about as long as it takes to find the camera. A picture made from a photo you already have skips the struggle and still gives you the shot.

No costume for your pet to put up with

Many dogs and cats dislike hats, hoods and anything around the legs. With a dog Halloween photo made from a normal picture, your pet stays comfortable and you still get the costume.

Your own pet, not a stock dog

The prompt asks to keep the same breed, face and fur color. In our tests the golden retriever kept its coat and smile, and the black cat kept its amber eyes.

Costumes you could never buy in their size

A glowing dinosaur suit, a full vampire cape or a cornfield at sunset are easy in a picture. Post the dog Halloween photo, print it or send it to the family chat.

Dog and cat Halloween photo questions

How do I put my dog in a Halloween costume with AI?

Upload a clear photo of your dog to the box at the top, press Use this look on one of the cards or type your own costume, and press Generate. The dog Halloween photo keeps your dog's face and coat and adds the costume and the scene.

Is there a free dog Halloween photo maker?

Not here, and we would rather say so up front. Making pictures needs a subscription or a one-time credit pack; the free monthly credits cover photo upscaling only. Each picture costs 8 credits at the default 2K size, 5 at 1K or 11 at 4K.

Will it still look like my dog?

In our tests the golden retriever kept its face, smile and red-gold coat in all four looks. Keep the prompt line about the same breed, face and fur color, and add any special marking by name, such as a white blaze or one brown ear.

What kind of pet photo works best?

A sharp photo taken at your pet's eye level, in daylight, with both eyes visible and one animal in the frame. Very dark photos, motion blur or a face turned away make a weaker dog Halloween photo, because markings drift more.

Can I make a Halloween photo of my cat too?

Yes. Upload a cat photo and change dog to cat in the prompt, as in the Witch Cat card. Name the coat and eye color, for example black fur and amber eyes. Cats often look best in a small cape or on a windowsill scene rather than a full suit.

Can I put two pets in one picture?

We did not test photos with more than one animal, so we cannot promise how they turn out. Every look here was made from a photo of one dog or one cat. If you try two pets, describe each one by breed and color and check both faces carefully.

Which AI makes the pet pictures?

The box starts on Nano Banana 2, Google's image editor, and you can switch to Nano Banana Pro, GPT Image 2 or Seedream above. Our examples were made with the earlier Nano Banana, so your results can differ a little from the cards.

Is an AI costume kinder than a real one for my pet?

For many pets, yes, because nothing goes on their body. A real costume can still be fine if your pet is relaxed, but watch for stress and never leave them alone in it. Photos and results are not sold; they stay in your history until you delete them.
